Dave Dombrowski is one of the biggest names when it comes to baseball executives. He serves with the Boston Red Sox of Major League Baseball (MLB) as President of Baseball Operations. Before joining the Sox, he had worked with many other teams such as the Detroit Tigers, Florida Marlins and Montreal Expos. Since his early days as a baseball executive, he’s had many accomplishments, including being Baseball America’s Executive of the Year in 2006. David Dombrowski was born on July 27, 1956 in Chicago, Illinois. Little is known about the childhood of this man who would go on to become one of the most respected decision makers in the Major League except for the fact that he was raised by hard working parents. While her father always left home at 6 a.m. and returned at 6:30 p.m., her mother also worked to support the family.

Raised in Palos Heights, he was determined to become general manager of a major league baseball team when he was only in his 8th grade. His dream did not change throughout Harold L. Richards High School and eventual Cornell University where he played college football for just one year before transferring to Western Michigan University. This is where he graduated after earning a degree in business administration in 1978. He would return twenty years later, in 1998, to receive a Distinguished Alumni Award.

MLB Career

Dave Dombrowski’s life as an executive began in 1978 when he was named minor league administrative assistant to the Chicago White Sox. He then quickly rose through the ranks to become assistant manager at Roland Hemond, but that didn’t last as he was soon fired. Recognizing his talent, the Montreal Expos picked him up the following year and named him director of player development in 1987, under Bill Stoneman, until a year later when he became general manager. Only 31 at the time, he was the youngest in the Major League at the time.

After the Expos, Dombrowsky became the Florida Marlins’ first general manager in 1991. He remained with the team for more than ten years before moving to the Detroit Tigers, where he became president. In 14 years, he led the Tigers to 5 playoffs and 4 consecutive American League Division titles. Also under his supportive leadership, the team appeared in four four-game American League Championship Series, three straight matches against ALCS, and two American League pennants.

From Detroit Tigers, Dave moved to the Boston RedSox as president of baseball operations. In its first season alone, the Sox recorded 93 regular season game wins and captured the American League Division title.

As far as there is no denying the fact that after a very successful career, Dave was only able to win one World Series which he won in 1997. He has won many individual awards such as the Andrew “Rube” Foster, UPI Executive of the Year, Baseball America Executive. of the year, and the Sporting News Executive of the year which he won with Doug Melvin. He is also inducted into the Lou Boudreau Hall of Fame.

Five months after they first met, Dave hit a home run by asking Karie Ross on a date. It started for the two of them who only a few years later were walking down the aisle as husband and wife.
