Edward Snowden is an American computer professional and former subcontractor for the US National Security Agency (NSA). While working for the NSA, he discovered that his employer’s practices were unethical and disturbing. Realizing this, Snowden thought the world needed to know what the NSA was doing and decided to blow the whistle. In the leaks, he revealed that the NSA practiced domestic surveillance, which he thought was a violation of privacy.
The whistleblower was concerned for his safety and then fled to Hong Kong, where he met a reporter from ‘The Guardian’. Edward Snowden was born on June 21, 1983 in North Carolina, United States. He grew up in a family where everyone worked for the federal government in some capacity. Snowden’s father was a Coast Guardsman and his mother a deputy chief at the United States District Court in Maryland. Even his grandfather served for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for several years. Snowden’s career choice was heavily influenced by his family and even from a young age, he was sure of the fact that he would serve the federal government at some point.

Snowden was an intelligent child and did not let his parents’ separation affect his studies. With an IQ of over 140, he continued to excel and rank highly in his school. Snowden in the tenth grade of he stopped attending his school due to mononucleosis. Despite his illness, young Snowden took the General Educational Development (GED) exam and did very well. For the next chapter of him, Edward attended classes at Anne Arundel Community College. So surprisingly, Snowden without completing his bachelor’s degree joined the University of Liverpool to pursue a master’s degree. During that period of time, Snowden found his passion for anime and the cultures of Japan and China. This same factor encouraged him to learn Japanese and Chinese, and at the age of 20, he adapted Buddhism as a religion.

Snowden began his career in 2005 as a security specialist for the Center for Advanced Language Security at the University of Maryland. In 2006, he was hired by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in Langley, Virginia as an IT professional. Working for the CIA, he discovered that the surveillance system infiltrated the privacy of the general public and began collecting documents. There were suspicions that he tore up top classified documents and the NSA had to let him go. Snowden then joined Dell at one of the NSA offices in Japan and worked as a subcontractor from 2009 to 2013.
Edward then joined another technology company at Booz Allen Hamilton, where he worked for three months. While working for the company, he became increasingly interested in the work of the NSA and its hidden files. Ultimately, he devised ways to break into the top-secret vaults of the NSA system. He found out more about the NSA’s unethical and immoral practices and thought it should be stopped immediately. Snowden wanted to make people aware of the work the NSA was doing and began collecting a large amount of information to prove his point.After collecting all the required documents, he said goodbye to his job and contacted a journalist from ‘The Guardian’ and the filmmaker Laura Poitras. They all met at a hotel in Hong Kong and in June 2013. Then the leaks officially came out via The Guardian. This report indicated that American telephones were being tapped without his knowledge and many of them were also being monitored. These reports shocked the world and the NSA was bitter about their former employee who leaked this sensitive document.

Edward was adamant about the work he was doing and continued to address the Hong Kong media. He told everyone that he would not sit quietly when the public’s privacy was monitored every second of the day. According to Snowden, this was damaging the basic human right to be free. The US government charged Snowden with “theft of government property” and “unlawful communication of intelligence information to an unauthorized person” under the espionage act.

Snowden, for security reasons, moved from Hong Kong to seek asylum in Russia. He stayed at the airport for nearly a month before the Russian government finally allowed him to stay. They managed to reject several US requests to extradite him. Back home, Snowden became a hero for his actions and millions of petitions were signed to bring him back home free of all charges.
The controversial figure is still in exile and has lost billions of US dollars to the leaks. Snowden believes that he did all of this for the well-being of the people of his country and believes that he is a patriot.
