The transfer, however, is hitting a snag between the NHL and the International Ice Hockey Federation meant the transfer had to be delayed. Relations between Malkin and Metallurg Magnitogorsk were strained to say the least. Two years later, on September 5, 2006, he signed an entry-level contract with the Penguins. The path that brought Malkin to the Penguins was quite complicated and his former team even had to file an antitrust lawsuit against the NHL and the Penguins. However, the case was dismissed without merit.

When the dust settled from the transfer saga, Malkin started doing what he knew best. The youngster was so good that he set an NHL record in his first six games, scoring in every game. At the end of his freshman year, he won the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie. He enjoyed both personal success and team success during his years with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
