GT Dave was born in 1978 in Beverly Hills, California, United States as the youngest of three children, to his parents Laraine and Michael Dave. In 1992, a family friend gave them a SCOBY that had been given to him by a Buddhist nun. When Dave was a freshman at Beverly Hills High School, Dave’s parents started making kombucha at home. His mother, Laraine, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1994 and underwent a lumpectomy and a year of chemotherapy and radiation. She drank the homemade kombucha during her battle with breast cancer and, after overcoming the disease, attributed it to the health benefits of her kombucha.

After leaving high school early and receiving his GED, Dave, who was taking business classes at Santa Monica College, began brewing kombucha at home with the intention of bringing it to market.

Dave was the first to put kombucha on store shelves. His first kombucha sale as GT Kombucha was to Erewhon Natural Foods in 1995, when he sold two cases of 12 bottles each that nearly sold out the first day. Similarly, at his family’s home, he continued to brew homemade kombucha, which quickly outgrew the kitchen and expanded into the living room, sleeping at 4 p.m. at midnight, while his family slept and worked. His mother Laraine helped him market the product by setting up tables to sample and share his cancer story.

Eventually, GT’s Kombucha continued to grow as it sold 30 to 50 cases a day in December 1997, leased a 2,000-square-foot industrial space in Gardena, and began hiring employees. Because of this, Foods Market even called to inquire about their kombucha distribution. He was hesitant at first, but ultimately decided to accept his offer, emphasizing the importance of preserving the integrity of his product.
