While creating the new record, Gibb celebrated his 30th birthday on March 5 in London. He went to Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital two days after his birthday party, complaining of chest symptoms. On March 10, 1988, Gibb's physician informed him that additional tests were required to identify the source of his chest problems. Shortly after, due to myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle brought on by years of cocaine usage that ultimately compromised his heart, Gibb collapsed unconscious and passed away.
