Jeff Flake is a United States Republican politician from Arizona who served six terms as a congressman before moving to the Senate in 2012. During his time in Congress, Flake served on the Appropriations Committee, while in the Senate he served on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, the Foreign Relations Committee and the Judiciary Committee.
Flake has described himself as a traditional conservative Republican, whom he has supported through his stance on gun control and other right-wing issues, though he has recently backed down on his party for a softer stance on issues like immigration and protecting gay rights and transgender workers.

Jeff Flake was born Jeffry Lane Flake to eleven children for Nerita (née Hock) and Dean Maeser Flake on December 31, 1962 in Snowflake, Arizona. He is the great-great-grandson of Mormon missionary William Jordan Flake, whose surname, along with that of Mormon Apostle Erasmus Snow, formed the name of his hometown.
Flake grew up on a cattle ranch before going on to attend Brigham Young University, where he earned first a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and then a Master of Arts in Political Science. Between his studies, Flake spent time in Zimbabwe and South Africa serving as a Mormon missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Upon returning to the United States, Flake worked at a public relations firm in Washington, DC before returning to the African continent to serve as Executive Director of the Endowment for Democracy in Namibia.
Jeff Flake later returned to Arizona to take the position of executive director at the Goldwater Institute before venturing into politics in 2000. He replaced Republican House Member Matt Salmon, who was leaving office. Flake served as a representative for six terms, the first for Arizona’s 1st congressional district and the last for Arizona’s 6th congressional district. In 2011, after it was revealed that Senator Jon Kyl had left his seat due to his retirement, Flake decided to run for the US Senate, defeating Democrat and former Surgeon General Richard Carmona.
In October 2017, Flake surprised both of his peers and analysts by announcing that he would not seek re-election to the Senate in 2018. Jeff Flake married his college sweetheart Cheryl (née Bae) in 1985. The couple, both lifelong members of The Church of Latter-day Saints, attended LDS-owned Brigham Young University, where they met. They married shortly after graduation and have since welcomed five children; Daughter Alexis and sons Ryan, Austin, Tanner and Dallin.
Alexis, who attended her parents’ alma mater, and is a former beauty queen who gave the Flakes her first grandchild after marrying Jason Arias. Her brother Austin was previously married to Logan Brown, however the couple are now divorced. Austin and his now-ex-wife made the news after being indicted by former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who became known for his poor treatment of Arizona immigrants. Arpaio claimed that his dogs, who died under Austin and Logan’s care in a kennel owned by Logan’s family, were subjected to animal cruelty by the couple. The suit was later dropped and the Flake family filed suit against Arpaio.
Another of Flake’s sons, Tanner, broke the news in 2015, posting several offensive comments on social media containing anti-Semitic remarks and the N-word. His father and Tanner later apologized for the comments.
