Matt McGorry is an American actor and social activist. He captured the hearts of his fans and critics alike with his role as Corrections Officer John Bennett in the Netflix series Orange is the New Black (OITNB). The AINTB actor was born on April 12, 1986 in Manhattan, New York, USA as Matthew David McGorry. With a penchant for performance, he got his start as a performer at the age of nine, acting in theaters and performing magic, an act he was into until later in his teens. He attended a high school drama, Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School in New York City, then enrolled at Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts.
Prior to his on-screen days and stardom, Matt had been a personal trainer and fitness expert for almost a decade. He was also a competitive bodybuilder and participated in weightlifting. At his best, he could lift 576 pounds and has been featured in several media such as Men’s Health, Men’s Fitness, Muscle & Fitness, and Life & Style.
Matt was cast in his first film, Thursday as the titular character, Gray Malcolm, in 2006 and made his television debut five years later in 2011 on the ABC daytime soap opera One Life to Live. Aside from his bodybuilding gig and acting, MattMcGorry is known for his interest in feminism, a cause he got involved in after discovering the meaning of the term in 2015. He played Daya’s intimate lover in the Netflix original series, where he abandoned his lover along with his unborn child in the show’s third season, an act that many viewers have not forgiven him for. Fans continued to identify him as John Bennett the fictional prison officer rather than Matt the actor, a fact he was quick to reiterate.
