Emelia Pérez Castellanos, better known as Ninón Sevilla , was a Cuban actress, vedette, dancer and rumbera, born on November 10, 1923, in Havana, Cuba. In her childhood, she grew up with her grandmother, a woman of great Catholic devotion who put her in a nun’s school, where Ninón felt a religious vocation and considered becoming a missionary nun, until she discovered her talent. for the dance. Since her family did not view dance favorably, she had to dance secretly and adopt a fictitious name, Ninon, in honor of the French writer Ninon de Lenclos. She was famous as a dancer in nightclubs and cabarets in Cuba, until working in the choir of Cuban comedians at the Martí Theater in Havana. She arrived in Mexico hired by the Puerto Rican producer and businessman Fernando Cortés to work at the Lyric Theater. Years later she debuted in the Degollado Theater company, in Guadalajara, where she was a sensation and whose producers offered her to start working in cinema. Ella ninón became one of the muses of Mexican cinema, working in films such as Pecadora (1947), Aventurera (1950), Victimas del sin (1951), Mulata (1954), among others. Her films caused a sensation in Mexico, Brazil and France, in addition to receiving offers to work at Columbia Pictures, which she rejected because she was not interested in working in the United States. She spent a season in retirement in New York, but she returned to Mexican cinema in 1984, with the film Noches de carnaval , a kind of tribute to the career of the actress herself. Ninon she died on the 1st. January 2015, at the age of 85, as a result of cardiac arrest.
