BIOGRAPHY
Originally from Pontefract in West Yorkshire, Toby Kebbell is the fourth of five children. Born to a father who was an engineer and a mother who was both a cook and a landscape gardener, they divorced when the boy was only eighteen months old. He then grew up alongside his mother in Nottinghamshire, a county in England which owes its reputation to the legend of Robin Hood .
At the age of seventeen, he joined the Central Television Workshop, a workshop which trains young actors for stage and cinema. It was also during this apprenticeship that he was spotted by the British director Shane Meadows , who gave him the role of Anthony, a victim avenged by his older brother after being abused by drug dealers. , in the independent thriller Dead Man’s Shoes (2004) .
After this remarkable performance, it was without great difficulty that Toby Kebbell returned to the screens. And not with just anyone since he was hired by Oliver Stone for his historical biopic Alexander , where he plays Pausinas, the murderer of Philip II of Macedon, the father of Alexander the Great. Then, Woody Allen deemed it unnecessary to give him an audition and included him directly in the casting of Match Point (2005) where he played a police officer.
His notoriety skyrocketed with the British thriller RockNRolla (2008) by Guy Ritchie . To slip into the shoes of Johnny Quid, a rock star doped up on crack, the actor fattened up for seven days to eat only one very small meal a day for the following nine weeks, ending up losing ten kilos. For the purposes of this crazy film, the actor also learned to play the piano and use a semi-automatic: preparatory work earning him praise from the newspaper Le Sun , which awarded him the prize for best actor.
This physical metamorphosis coupled with the accuracy of his previous performances earned him a BAFTA Awards nomination in the “rising star” category. The filming then continued for him: in 2010 he found himself in the castings of two productions signed Jerry Bruckheimer : Prince of Persia: the sands of time where he played one of Darstan’s brothers ( Jake Gyllenhaal ) and learned to ride a horse for the occasion, as well as The Sorcerer’s Apprentice with Nicolas Cage .
, who calls on him for his War Horse . After Alexander (2004), he again played the role of a murderer, John Wilkes Booth, the assassin of Lincoln, in The Conspiracy (2011) by Robert Redford , returns to the peplum in The Wrath of the Titans and the world of drugs with Cartel (2013) by Ridley Scott .
In the summer of 2014 and thanks to performance capture, Toby Kebbell became Koba, a gorilla in Planet of the Apes: The Showdown . The actor then went on to release blockbusters at an impressive pace, appearing in Fantastic 4 , Warcraft: The Beginning , Ben-Hur and Kong: Skull Island .
