Cory Anthony Booker was born the last of two children to Carolyn Rose (née Jordan) and Cary Alfred Booker on April 27, 1969 in Washington, DC. However, he grew up in Harrington Park, New Jersey, where he attended Northern Valley Regional High School in Old Tappan.
In high school, Booker was a standout athlete, earning a selection for the USA Today All-USA high school football team in 1986. After graduating, he enrolled at Stanford University, where he continued to play football, although he never considered pursuing a career. Booker was notably elected to the All-Pacific-10 Academic Team before earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science in 1991. The following year, Booker completed the requirements for a Master of Arts in Sociology at the same school before transferring to the University of Oxford on a Rhodes Scholarship. He graduated with honors in 1994 in history of the United States.
Upon returning to the United States, Cory Booker enrolled at Yale Law School, where he received his Juris Doctorate in 1997 before running for Newark City Council in 1998 and winning a seat there. In 2002, Booker tried to run for mayor of Newark and lost. He returned for the same position in 2006 and won it brilliantly. Booker served as mayor until December 2012, when he announced that he wanted to run for the US Senate. There was speculation that he would run for governor of New Jersey. After college, Cary moved to Washington, DC to take a job at IBM. It was here that he met and fell in love with his future wife, Carolyn.
